Hello and Welcome!

What is Budgeting?
According to Investopedia, budgeting is "an estimation of revenue and expenses over a specified future period of time and is usually compiled and re-evaluated on a periodic basis" (Ganti, Boyle & Eichler, 2022). I couldn't agree more!
Budgeting involves planning, managing, and re-evaluating your finances through revenue and expense control.
A budget takes into account current responsibilities and future goals. It should be flexible enough to accommodate unexpected expenses but efficient for long-term benefits.
For now, let's focus on personal budgets and how to create one that works for you.

Why Everyone needs to Budget
For Family, Retirement, and Healthcare Coverage
Among the top reasons for budgeting, retiring well, having good healthcare coverage, sending your kids to school, and taking care of your parents are some of the most immediate reasons we have for budgeting.
To achieve this, you'll need a plan. Budgeting enables you to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely) goals to accomplish your vision.
To achieve personal goals.
If you want to buy your favorite handbag, travel, and invest in self-development, you'll need money to do it. Effective budgeting gives room to invest in these things while having peace of mind about your finances. Investing in yourself will also add more value and fulfillment to your life.
To gain control over your finances.
Budgeting will shed some light on your financial situation if you are in a good or bad place. Regardless, budgeting is crucial to achieving your financial goals.
As you practice budgeting, you gain control over your finances, and you can understand how you are making or losing money.
For better Financial decisions
As earlier mentioned, budgeting gives you control over your finances. It will also lead to better decision-making. You'll know what you can/cannot afford, evaluate your current spending habits and be more intentional about your financial goals.
Because Time is Valuable
We all want to have better control of our time. We can't do that without gaining control over our financial health. A budget will give you that control and enable you to make time for the things that matter most in your life.

How to Budget: 5 Simple Steps
Set SMART goals
The first thing you need to do is know why you are budgeting. Maybe it's to pay your student debt, buy a car or house, or take a vacation. Whatever it is, you must have it written down.
SMART goals, or Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-based goals will keep you accountable when budgeting.
First, you need to be specific about what you want and why you are budgeting- this is the first question you need to answer before anything else.
Second, it would help if you were reasonable with your goals. In my previous blog post, "10 money habits for every Woman.", I discussed not depriving yourself, in the name of budgeting. Good budgeting needs to accommodate your current needs efficiently while you aim for your future goals.
Thirdly, a budget should be attainable and realistic. If you set an unrealistic goal like buying a Ferrari in a month while working minimum wage, taking care of family, and other expenses, that is not effective planning. As earlier said, set a goal that accommodates your living circumstances while making room for future achievements.
Understand your Current Obligations
I've already touched a bit on current obligations. In essence, you need to know what your current responsibilities are. If you're a single mom needing to care for your children, don't compare your situation to that of a college student.
Think about what your current circumstances will permit and move on from there.
Manage Revenue and Expenses
Managing revenue and expense is a huge part of budgeting. Know your income and fixed and variable expenses. If this step is correct, you'll have no problem achieving your budgeting and financial goal, even if it's saving only $20 every month.
Evaluate Budget
A crucial part of budgeting is evaluation. You need to check how timely and efficient your budget is. This step will help you make adjustments. For example, how long you need to budget for that dream Ferrari.
Evaluating will also help you better understand and take control of your finances.
Celebrate Wins
The final step is to celebrate wins. I'm not just saying it.
Celebrating your wins reminds you of what you've accomplished through budgeting. It also encourages you to dream bigger and better. When you look back at the journey, you'll also make wiser decisions in the future.
Conclusion
You've made it to the end! Thank you!
